Living in
The Now: Great Advice for Tough Times Michael Phelps. The Dali Lama. Celine Dion. What is the common denominator of an athlete, spiritual leader and artist? Focus. They live the moment. They know the power of the present and invest energy to accomplish their feat, now. The business of success in tough times interests me; the psychology of success in tough times fascinates me. That some people thrive regardless of the conditions in which they find themselves is one of life’s most inspiring lessons. To protect your attitude and capture the power of your psyche, you must focus on now. The magnitude of everything you experience in tough times can be overwhelming. When you consider how much you must sell next year to achieve sales quota, it may appear an impossible task in a territory suffering the effects of a down economy. When you consider the ground you need to recover in your 401k, it can be discouraging. The fact that you may not own your home for fifteen or twenty years makes you feel like you’re paying rent on the mortgage company’s home. The power of now means focusing on the present. When you slow down this crazy world and deal only with the now, you can screen out the noise that contributes to the buzz in your head. You cannot control the outcome of your sales efforts for next year, but you can control your next sales call and how well you prepare. When you compartmentalize an activity and deal only with that activity, you're living in the moment. Compartmentalizing is directing all of your attention to the task at hand, investing all of your energy in the one thing you can control—the now. I call the power you extract from the now, the motivation of the moment. Put enough of these moments together and you have a pretty good future.
